With an aim to make various fire safety permission processes hassle-free and fast-track approvals while constructing buildings, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has empanelled 72 ‘Fire and Life Safety Auditors' in the city.

The auditors are professionals in the field of fire safety and they have been empanelled after due diligence and based on their professional qualifications.

According to MFB, this will help people get their buildings certified for fire safety faster. The list of 72 ‘Fire and Life Safety Auditors' will soon be available on the BMC website. The people can easily access the contact information of the auditors and appoint them to inspect fire safety measures for their development projects.

"The auditors have been appointed to ensure better safety in the residential buildings having height up to 32 metres (less than 10 storeys). This will assist people in getting fire safety permission quickly without approaching the fire brigade department. The auditors will file reports of the audited buildings after the inspection," says MFB official.

As per MFB data, 80 per cent of fire incidents in Mumbai happen due to shortcircuit.

Besides appointing auditors, the fire brigade department has also developed a state-of-the-art Building Inspection Software-based System (electrical auditor) for effective inspection of various buildings under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention & Life Safety Measures Act (2006).

"The electrical audit system will automatically monitor the compliance period granted to the applicant, failing which the action deemed fit will be initiated through the legal department of BMC. It will systematically collect data for future monitoring," adds the official.
