The Election Commission has given preliminary approval to the ward restructuring plan prepared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. According to the new plan, there will be 236 new wards instead of the present 227 in the next corporation elections. The State Election Commission has written a letter to the BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal informing that he invite suggestions on the draft.
The date for sending recommendations to the State Election Commission has been fixed for March 2. The letter also mentioned that the decision on OBC reservation will be taken after the Supreme Court's direction on the same.
This new development means that the BMC elections are likely to be announced soon. Sources said that the elections will be declared after the completion of the ward formation process. The corporation election is held every five years and was initially supposed to be held in February. The dates have, however, not been announced yet.
