The Hancock bridge near Sandhurst Road received its first debilitating blow just past midnight yesterday when civic staffers and Central Railway officials began an 18-hour process of dismantling it.

Built in 1879 and rebuilt in 1923, it belongs to the era of Blackstone bridges in Mumbai. CR is keen to preserve a slice of this heritage, though, and is making attempts to find and preserve a plaque that carries details of its installation all those many years ago.

The original stone bridge, 45-meter long, saw little traffic earlier because few trains ran to Tanna (now Thane). The dismantling, said officials, will continue till 6.20 pm on Sunday evening.
