Pravin Darekar, the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, on Sunday lashed out at the government over illegal hacking of trees in state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray's own constituency, Worli, a day after World Environment Day.
He alleged that nearly 25-30 trees were cut down in Worli for better visibility of advertisement hoardings. Darekar along with BJP Mumbai chief Mangal Lodha and others on Sunday morning visited the site where the trees were chopped off.

"It is very shameful. Trees were cut down a day after World Environment Day, and that too in the constituency of our environment minister. Around 25-30 trees have been brought down in Worli. We have come here to take note of the situation. This is not our personal issue. It is related to the environment. We want this issue to be looked into," he said.
Darekar said videos of the hacking of the trees were available and that there should be an enquiry into the matter. The role of the officials and relevant departments involved should also be looked into, if there was a lapse on their part.
