Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, met with senior NCP leaders on Thursday to discuss the party's performance in the recent Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
The meeting, held at his official residence Deogiri in south Mumbai, included discussions about the results, in which the NCP contested four seats in Maharashtra but won only one, Raigad.
The conference held to discuss Lok Sabha Elections 2024 performance was attended by NCP President Ajit Pawar, Party Working President Praful Patel, and top leaders and state ministers Hasan Mushrif, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, and Dhananjay Munde.
Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar's wife, was defeated by NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar's daughter, by more than 1.5 lakh votes in the Baramati seat.
Last July, Ajit Pawar and many MLAs joined the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena coalition in Maharashtra, causing a schism in the NCP, which was founded by his uncle Sharad Pawar.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress, secured 30 of Maharashtra's 48 Lok Sabha seats. In contrast, the Mahayuti coalition of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP won 17 seats.
Sharad Pawar's NCP faction triumphs in Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections 2024
Veteran politician Sharad Pawar has maintained strong grassroots support, with his section of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) winning 8 of the 10 contested Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, resulting in an 80 per cent success rate in the 2024 elections.
In contrast, the NCP faction led by his estranged nephew and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won only one of the four seats it sought, for a 25 per cent success rate, reported PTI.
According to the report, the Congress also made a big comeback, winning 13 of the 17 seats it contested, up from its lone seat in the 2019 elections, with a 75 per cent success rate, the report stated.
The NCP (SP) won the majority of its seats in western Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar's traditional stronghold. Ajit Pawar's faction secured only the Raigad Lok Sabha seat, where the party's state president Sunil Tatkare defeated his Shiv Sena (UBT) rival, Anant Geete.
Among the NCP (SP)'s eight victories was Baramati, featuring a high-profile race between Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule and Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar.
