Shubha Raul removes photos, completes handover on last visit to office

It was memories of another day for former mayor Shubha Raul when she went back to her office at the BMC headquarters yesterday after Shiv Sena's Shraddha Jadhav was sworn in as her successor.

The first thing she noticed when she entered her office was photographs of her foreign jaunts still tacked up on her office soft board. "She got them removed immediately," said a source.

Then came the flowers orchids and other exotica which reminded Raul of her official residence and garden. "I will tell her [Jadhav] about my garden," Raul said softly.

The former mayor was a very keen gardener and did her bit to increase the dwindling sparrow population in Mumbai by building nesting houses for the birds in her garden.

Raul then handed over her mobile phone and laptopu00a0 and informed Jadhav about it. "I will also explain all the work-in-progress to her. She is my senior and will certainly know how to handle the situation," said Raul.

The mayoral elections began at 11 am and by 11.30 am it was clear that the Sena would win. The band outside started playing and everyone on the streets began waving the saffron flag.

Rajhans Singh the leader of opposition in the BMC said, "The Samajwadi Party decided to support the Sena by not voting. Had they voted, the outcome would have been different."

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray obviously seemed happy with the news and greeted the new mayor at her office.

Adolf D'souza, the corporator from Juhu cross-voted and supported Vidya Chavan of the NCP instead of the BJP candidate Shailaja Girkar.
