Nirmal Singh had arrived on the first day of the job around 4.30pm on Wednesday. Sometime later he fell on to the tracks, badly injuring his head. He was immediately taken to KEM Hospital in serious condition, but succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours of Thursday. "He had started on his job on Wednesday itself and was working on the bridge when he lost his balance and fell," said Singh's co-worker. "We are not provided with any safety gear while working," the co-worker added.

Central Railway divisional officials said they have sought a report of the work in which Singh was engaged and said they will initiate action if it was railway work. "It is the responsibility of the contractor to provide all safety equipment to the workers. These are basic clauses of the tender documents for any work."
