The Sakinaka police have arrested a 23-year-old woman for killing her unborn child by consuming medicines, and then wrapping it in a plastic bag and flinging the murdered foetus out of her home.
According to the police, they received a call on October 4 informing them of a premature baby lying in the duct of a building in MHADA colony in Sakinaka.
"The medical examination revealed that the foetus was killed in the womb itself and the mother had consumed medicines to kill the baby," said an official, requesting.
Receiving no leads through preliminary inquiries, cops conducted tests on five women in the building through which they were able to identify the accused and arrested her on Thursday.
According to the Sakinaka police, the accused had come to Mumbai one-and-a-half years ago in search of a job and she had been staying alone in the city.
"It is a very sensitive issue. The accused has been suffering mental trauma since the time of the crime.
We cannot put pressure on the accused as there are chances that she might lose her mental balance," said an officer from Sakinaka police station.
Cops added that the woman was booked under Section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the IPC.
