Seven lakes that supply water to city saw good rainfall on Friday and Saturday, pushing total useful stock of water from 87,184 million litres to 95,443 million litres

After depriving the catchment areas of rainfall throughout the season, the rain gods have finally given the city reason to be cautiously optimistic. The seven lakes that supply water to the city saw good rainfall on Friday and Saturday, pushing the total useful stock of water from 87,184 million litres to 95,443 million litres.

mid-day had reported on Saturday that the lakes had enough water to supply the city for only another 23 days. That figure now stands at 25. While Vihar and Tulsi, which are within the Greater Mumbai area, have been receiving good rainfall, the other lakes have begun to see proper rainfall only since Friday.

Cut to stay
The BMC, however, is in no mood to lift the 20% water cut just yet. "The amount of rainfall we have seen is good, but not great, as the water available in the catchment areas will last only for 25 days.

The lakes need more rain. This month will be crucial for the city's water supply and the amount of rain in the catchment areas will be the basis for us to take a call on lifting the water cut later," said a senior BMC official.
