Opposition leader Ramdas Kadam on Tuesday sought a CBI probe against former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh over his alleged involvement in the Wakf land deals in the state and asked the government to file a criminal case against him.
"We demand that a CBI enquiry be conducted against Deshmukh as a Parliamentary panel on the issue has blamed the state government," Kadam said in the Lower House.
"The state government has betrayed Muslims and the Parliamentary panel has shown that there were irregularities in the Wakf land deals during the tenure of Deshmukh as Chief Minister," Kadam said.
The government had promised that the Shaikh Committee set up to probe Wakf land controversy would complete its work in a year but it has been 22 months and its report was still awaited, Kadam claimed.
NCP MLA Bashir Patel supported Kadam's demand for a probe into the matter. Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar has asked the state government to take note of the issue.
