"It makes more sense because it's safe and cheap. We hear stories of people taking ill after eating adulterated mithai so we decided to buy eclairs instead. We have already placed an order of 100 packs for today," said a supporter who did not wished to be named. Mawa is generally used in the preparation of most sweets including barfi, laddoos and pedas.
Said Abdul Sattar, owner of Suleiman Usman Mithaiwala at Mohammed Ali Road, "Sale of mawa mithais has certainly gone down. In fact, our business has been affected by almost 20 per cent since Diwali and I don't think this will change now. My customers say they prefer chocolates or sweets that are not made of mawa."
And of course, eclairs are inexpensive at Re 1 eachu00a0- a basic mawa peda (generally inedible) costs Rs 1.50 each.
Pradeep Jain, general secretary of the Sweets Association of India, echoed Sattar's sentiments. "Political parties have been inquiring about mithai, but there honestly have been no bookings. They say it's inauspicious
to make bookings before the results are declared," said Jain.
For parties willing to spend, there are homemade chocolates to choose from. A city-based chocolatier has been paid Rs 42,000 for 70 kilos of chocolates. "Obviously, they will be distributed among senior party officials, not ordinary workers or well-wishers," said a source.
Some leaders choose to be extravagant like Sardar Tara Singh, the BJP candidate from Mulund. He has ordered 101 kilos of anjeer barfi, which comes at an approximate cost of Rs 500 per kilo.
