Three members of a gang of five people that allegedly committed a string of robberies on the Mumbai- Ahmedabad Highway were nabbed on Sunday. The trio were caught when they were in Dahisar in a stolen car, but two other gang members managed to flee.
The three accused are Shahid Ashadi (30), Rupesh Singh (29) and Anish Khan (29), residents of Antop Hill, Nallasopara and Dahisar respectively. They would steal cars and motorcycles on the highway, and then use the vehicles to intercept other vehicles and rob the occupants of their jewellery and their cars, said API Tukaram Rathod of MHB police station. Police said the men have more than 25 such cases against them.
An MHB police officer said, "Late on Sunday night, the five accused, including Shahid, Rupesh and Anish, were in a stolen Volkswagen car near Vasai on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-way. They intercepted another car and stole it after threatening the driver with choppers. They then fled towards Dahisar. A wireless message was sent on the police network and the MHB police nabbed them in a nakabandi near Dahisar."
Two others in the Volkswagen fled and later dumped the car on the road. The case was transferred to the Valiv police, as the robbery occurred there. A Valiv police officer said, "They are accused in more than 15 cases of car and bike robberies, and 12 of chain- snatchings on the highway. We have recovered the two cars."
