The duo, from Bhoiwada police station, was going home after doing the night shift, when the truck loaded with soft drinks ran into them from behind
Two policemen had a narrow escape after a truck loaded with soft drinks lost control and ran into them. The incident took place at Naigaon, Parel on Sunday around 12.15 pm when two assistant police sub-inspectors, Punjabrao Wakse and Nevrutti Deshmukh, were returning home after completing their night shift at Bhoiwada police station.
Shivkumar Yadav lost control of his truck and hit two assistant police sub-inspectors who were on their way home, on Sunday afternoon
According to the Bhoiwada police, while the two were walking, a truck suddenly came from behind and hit them. While Deshmukh fell on the side of the road and suffered minor bruises on his hands and feet, Wakse fell and the vehicle went over him. Fortunately, alert locals immediately took both men to the nearby KEM Hospital and also caught the driver, Shivkumar Yadav (28).
"We were walking back home and were about 500 metres from the police station, when the truck hit us from behind. I fell on the side of the road and started to lose consciousness. Thankfully, the people around took hold of me. I looked for my friend and then realised that he had gone under the truck between the wheels.
The crowd took us to the hospital," recounted Deshmukh. "I have some bruises on my knees and internal injuries, but have been released by the doctor," he added. Wakse, however, fractured three ribs in the accident and is still at KEM Hospital.
The driver has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal) of the Indian Penal Code. He is also charged under sections 134 A and B of Motor Vehicles Act. Yadav was produced in Bhoiwada court on Monday and has been remanded in police custody.
