A 42-year-old office-goer was attacked by three unidentified men in the morning yesterday. The victim was identified as Umesh Harishchandra Rane, who works as a cashier at Reliance Energy in Kurla. Rane had left his residence in Bhandup at 7 am yesterday and used a shortcut to reach the railway station faster.

It is at this isolated stretch that the man was accosted by three unidentified men. They tried to snatch his valuables, but the man resisted. Somehow, the trio managed to get hold of his chain. But when they went after the cashier's bracelet, he put up a fight. This is when one of the men took out a gun and shot at Rane. The bullet pierced Rane's stomach.

"In a state of injury, my son entered our building. Our watchman brought him home and we immediately took him to the hospital," said Rane's mother. Rane was admitted to Fortis Hospital and is now out of danger. According to the woman, the shortcut is used by many residents of the society, Usha Complex.

"People always use this lane to reach Bhandup station, but it's very dangerous. I have heard that many robbery incidents have taken place in that lane," she added. In another incident in the wee hours on Wednesday, another man was looted of a gold chain by three unidentified accused in Vikhroli (East), near the railway station. Cops suspect it is the same gang that has committed both the offences. The trio has been booked for attempt to murder and robbery, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.u00a0
