The letter dated July 29, one day before Memon was hanged, also contained a woman's photograph and Virar West address. "We suspect that someone has played a prank on this woman to trouble her. Why would anyone threaten the police while revealing their identity?" said a police officer.

The police plan to send out a search party to locate the Virar resident. "We need to check if she shares an enmity with someone," the police officer said, adding that they had also written to the Postal department to find out details about where the letter was posted from.

"It's not uncommon for people to take advantage of sensitive situations in order to settle scores with each other," said DCP Dhanajay Kulkarni, spokesperson, Mumbai Police.

Additionally, the Cyber Cell is planning to investigate Whatsapp messages of defamatory nature that could have led to a law and order situation, that were making the rounds before and on the day of the hanging.
