Thousands of supporters turned up to pay their last respects to Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and comrade 82-year-old Govind alias Anna Pansare who succumbed to his injuries after two unidentified assailants shot him on Monday morning.

Supporters had gathered to catch a glimpse of Pansare at Kolhapur Airport at 9 am on Saturday. Around 12.40 pm, when the flight finally landed, they shouted ‘Amar rahe, amar rahe, Anna amar rahe' and started weeping.

Heavy bandobast was deployed by the Kolhapur police. More than 100 volunteers of CPI known as Red Gaurdi (volunteers clad in red shirts), assisted cops to control the sitaution.

A half-mast CPI flag tribute was paid to Pansare while volunteers shouted slogans of Lal Salaam. CPI veteran leader Prakash Reddy first offered flowers to him and was later followed by the slain leader's supporters.

Later, Chandrakant Patil, guardian minister of Kolhapur and Superintendent of Police Manojkumar Sharma arrived as supporters shouted slogans and protested their negligence for not arresting Pansare's killers. Pansare's body was then taken to Panchaganga Ghat where he was cremated.
