Thane: The police here have registered a case against a man, a native of Karnataka, for duping a city-based young woman of Rs three lakh after promising to marry her.
Sub-inspector V P Gole of Vartak Nagar police station said as per the complaint filed by the woman, she got engaged to Piraji S Gaikwad, hailing from Damberi in Bijapur district of Karnataka, in November 2013. The marriage was to take place in 2014.
The woman's parents allegedly gave Gaikwad Rs three lakh in dowry, to buy a plot of land. But Gaikwad, having taken the money, went on to marry another girl, as per the complaint.Gaikwad has been absconding.
Police have registered a case under Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 as well as under the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and other offences.
