Dyandev Mahadev Nikade's quick thinking helped save the life of a suicidal teenager. Nikade, who is the bodyguard of Shankarao Pathore, assistant municipal commissioner of Mumbra in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), spotted the teen while she was climbing the walls of the Kalwa bridge when he was on his way to Pathore's office.
"We were passing from the Kalwa bridge around 1.15 pm. I saw the girl getting down from an autorickshaw and going towards the bridge. She threw away her belongings, including her mobile phone and bag. I thought something was suspicious and asked the driver to stop. She was climbing the boundary walls when I stopped her, held her hand and took her into the car," said Nikade. According to the police, the girl has been identified as Nandini Gupta, a resident of Ramnagar in Uttar Pradesh.
Nikade said, "We started interrogating the girl and she said her father began harassing her after her mother's death a few months ago. So she fled from her home, came to Mumbai and decided to commit suicide. She got here two days ago and had not eaten anything. We handed her over to the Kalwa police."
MM Bhagwan, senior PI, Kalwa police station said, "We have taken the statement of the girl and sent her to a women's rehabilitation center in Thane."
