Thane residents were fast asleep when mishap occurred; building of 37 flats evacuated by TMC; authorities to conduct a structural audit soon
A senior citizen died and three people were injured after the floor of the flat above collapsed on a sleeping elderly couple at Wagle Estate, Thane (West) a little after mid-night on Friday.
According to the information available with the disaster management cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), around 12.30am the floor of the 3rd floor caved into the 2nd floor flat at Vijay Niwas building, killing 60-year-old Bablu Ghose on the spot. His wife Bani, 56, has sustained serious injuries and is currently at Jupiter hospital.
Officials said at the time of the incident the Ghose's were fast asleep. In the incident, the 3rd floor residents Nina Pathare, 51, and Yasmin Pathare, 22, were also injured. They are being treated at Sai Hospital.
The TMC sent an emergency vehicle and two ambulances to the spot after the accident.
An official said there are 37 flats at Vijay Niwas apartments. "After the incident, we evacuated the building and shifted everyone to a safe
place. Authorities are planning to conduct a structural audit of the building. However, investigations are on to find out the exact cause of the collapse."
