Twelve-year-old Bhiwandi building crashed around 9 am on Friday morning; over 17 people still feared trapped in debris
An 18-year-old girl died and fours others were injured when a ground-plus-three-storey structure collapsed around 9am this morning at Bhiwandi. The local authorities and NDRF were called in for rescue operations and until help from the authorities reached the site, the locals managed to rescue as many people as they could. Around 17 people are feared trapped in the debris.
Locals of Navi Basti area in Bhiwandi woke up on Friday morning to loud crashing sounds and saw that the building, which is around 12 years old, had collapsed. The fire officials who reached the spot rescued around five people, who were sent to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi were they are being treated. At the time of going to press fire bridge vehicles, including officers from Kalyan, Thane and Ulhasnagar along with the NDRF were looking for people trapped in the debris. The deceased has been identified as Vruksa Ahmed Khan.
Rescue operation in progress
NDRF Assistant Commandant Kumar Raghvendra told mid-day, "The teams were rushed to the spot for rescue operations." An NDRF official said, "As per initial information, around 17 people are trapped in the debris of the building that collapsed at Navi Basti in Bhiwandi. We have deputed two teams of NDRF officials at the site at 9.35am. A green corridor has been activated for the movement NDRF teams."
