While Neelkanth Bamunkar passed away at Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli on June 27, his relatives have refused to claim his body and conduct last rites

For the past month, the body of a 55-year-old man has been languishing in a hospital morgue in the city, with his family refusing to claim it for last rites.

The deceased, identified as Neelkanth Bamunkar, was a resident of Gavde Nagar in Dahisar (East). He is survived by a relative who lives in the same area, and his sister who stays in Nallasopara (East). The police revealed that Bamunkar was working as an estate agent for the past three years, and was ailing.

Police Sub-inspector Archana Koli of Dahisar police station said, "On June 1, we received a call from a resident of Gavde Nagar, informing us that a man was lying unconscious on the road.

We admitted him to a local hospital. Later, we admitted him to Shatabdi Hospital at Kandivli (West). Meanwhile, we identified him and informed his family members, but they refused to go and see him."

In hospital, the doctors diagnosed Bamunkar with TB, and started treating him. Bamunkar, however, passed away on June 27, after which doctors sent his body to the facility's mortuary. The body stayed in the morgue for over a month, and though the police informed his family members about his death, they refused to claim it.

A few days ago, the authorities at Shatabdi Hospital said they could no longer keep the body in the hospital. The police then shifted it to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli. The authorities at Bhagwati Hospital have also refused to keep the body in the hospital, and asked the police to take it back.

On Wednesday, the Dahisar police registered an Accidental Death Report and declared that the dead body was unclaimed.
