Nationalist Congress Party Chief Sharad Pawar at a book launch on Saturday made a point about how the state government is treating its police force. He was launching a book by former police officer Isaque Bagwan, who was responsible for killing gangster Manya Surve in an 1982 encounter.

"Good officers should be treated properly, and shouldn't be humiliated," was the statement Pawar made, observers say, hinting at the before-time transfer of former commissioner of police, Rakesh Maria, although he did not take names. "Do I need to spell out who I am talking about?," he quipped. The Congress NCP government had appointed Maria as Mumbai police commissioner in February 2014.
