As part of its upgradation plan, the Indian Railways (IR) will be installing âvacuum toilets' - similar to the ones used in aircrafts.
To begin with, the project will commence on a pilot basis at Churchgate station during which five such toilets will be installed within a month's time. Each of the toilets is worth R6 lakh, six times the cost of the existing ones.
Confirming the development, GC Agarwal, general manager for Western and Central Railways, said, "To begin with, five toilets will be installed at the Churchgate station."
Another officer claimed that the top brass also took cognisance of the mid-day report (Survive platform loo challenge, May 15), which helped expedite the process.
Explaining the functionality, an officer said that the highly advanced toilets could be controlled and maintained via software. He added that the toilets would be capable of auto-segregation and anything other than faecal matter would be directed towards a separate collection bin.
"Unwanted material like plastic bags and gutka sachets, among others, will be segregated and collected in a different bin. During maintenance, a janitor just needs to press a button, collect this waste and dispose it off.
These toilets haven't been introduced anywhere else by the railways."
