Crooks: Amit Zaveri and Viresh Modi took a jewellery store owner into confidence by posing as commission agents and then fled with ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh. |
In less than one month, MIDC police received more than three complaints against the duo.
The incidentMahesh Italia of Binny's Designer Diamond Jewellery, based in Andheri (E), stated in his police complaint that the duo had approached his company in August, saying they were commission agents and wished to do business with them.
Italia checked out their references and even met them at their office in a Kandivli mall.
Satisfied about their genuineness, he agreed to give them a two per cent commission on every sale. On November 4, the duo took jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh from Italia ostensibly to show their clients.
Six days later, the duo gave him Rs 4 lakh as part payment for the jewellery. Having gained Italia's trust, they then took jewellery of Rs 16 lakh to sell.
But the duo never got in touch with Italia again. When Italia visited their office, he found it locked.
Assistant Police Inspector R Wagmare said they arrested the duo from Andheri and recovered valuables worth
Rs 5 lakh.
On learning about Italia's complaint, other victims of the duo too have come forward, leading police to believe the scam could run into crores.
"The accused are not co-operating and, hence, we are not able to get the remaining booty," said Wagmare.
A shocked Italia said, "In our business, trust is important and these people betrayed the trust." Meanwhile, the police have registered a case of cheating.
