After months of delay, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has finally begun installing e-toilets across 14 locations on both major routes. Earlier this year in March, NMMC had announced the decision to introduce e-toilets along the routes by June.
However, the project was delayed due to poor response to tenders floated. Out of a total of 14 smart e-toilets costing Rs 1.5 crore, eight were meant to come up along the Thane-Belapur road while the rest were to sit on Palm Beach road. The toilets, to be operational in a month, will be available for use against a charge of Rs 1.
"The door of the toilet will open as soon as the coin is inserted. After use, it will auto flush, and the door will automatically lock after the user leaves," said an official from NMMC. Each toilet will be fitted with a 250-litre water tank which will refill automatically. The lights inside the toilets will also come on and off according to user entry and exit.
Meanwhile, NMMC is mulling over the idea to construct 100 toilets especially for women. If the plan goes through, these are expected to come up at busy locations including railway stations, market places and bus depots.
