Starting December 1, people can apply for a driver's licence online. This will help people avoid long queues and dealing with illegal touts
Remember the time you went to apply for your driver's licence? The chaos, the serpentine queues, the touts and the haphazardly parked vehicles at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) are enough to make you turn back. However, there is good news for those who wish to apply for the licence in the future. From December 1, the State Transport Department will allow people to apply for their driver's licence online.
Confirming the same, SK Sharma, Principal Secretary (Transport) told sunday mid-day, "From December 1, people can apply online for the driving licence and after filling in the details; they can make an appointment for the required tests." In other words, one need not come all the way to any of the three RTOs at Tardeo, Wadala and Andheri, only for forms.
At present, applying for a driver's licence at the RTOs includes a number of hassles, including dealing with illegal agents and touts. "Under the pretext of helping out, touts often cheat applicants. Once the process starts online, all these problems will be resolved," said a senior transport department official. Every day, at least a 1,000 people apply for driving licences across the three RTOs.
Earlier this June, the department went online for issuing learners' licences. The transport department is also going online for registeration of vehicles and number plates.
