Officers of Navi Mumbai crime branch arrested a 33-year-old man for smuggling snake poison. The police have seized 230 ml of the poison worth Rs 57.50 lakh. The arrested accused has been identified as Mahesh Rajeev Shetty (33), a resident of Ghatkopar.

Well-planned trap
Amit Shelar, sub-inspector of Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC), Navi Mumbai, said they received a tip-off about snake poison being smuggled, and accordingly, laid a trap, sending a decoy customer to Shetty.

"On November 5 around 8 pm, the accused went near CBD Belapur station for the deal. We arrested him and seized the bottle," said Shelar.

Poison from Karnataka
The accused was produced in court and sent to police custody till November 10. "We found out that the accused had brought the poison from his native place in Karnataka. We will soon go there to get details," he added.

Multiple uses
The accused said the poison is also used as a drug in rave parties. It can be used as a medicine to treat snake bites as well," said Ishan Kharote, sub-inspector, ANC, Navi Mumbai crime branch.

A case has been registered at the CBD Belapur police station under sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
