Jail authorities said Ramesh Devji Vathare had slipped into depression after the court rejected every bail plea he made in the year since his arrest
A 45-year-old rape accused committed suicide by hanging himself in Taloja Central Jail in the wee hours of yesterday. Jail authorities said the accused had slipped into depression after his repeated attempts to secure bail in the last one year failed to yield result.
The deceased was identified as Ramesh Devji Vathare, a resident of Dahisar (West). He was accused of raping his neighbour's 4-year-old daughter at his residence last year. Officials claimed Vathare hanged himself around 5 am using a bed sheet. His body has been sent for post-mortem.
Commenting on Vathare's case, Sudhakar Kamble from MHB police station said, "He committed the crime on February 21, 2014. The toddler was playing outside with her friends when the accused lured her to his residence and raped her. While he tried to flee the spot, we managed to nab him."
Another officials said they suspected that Vathare took the drastic step as he slipped into depression after the court rejected every bail plea he made since his arrest.
