With illegal dumping activity on the rise in Navi Mumbai, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation plans to introduce a helpline for residents to call and register complaints

Taking into account the increase in the number of incidents of illegal dumping of debris in Navi Mumbai, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) plans to introduce a helpline number, through which residents can alert the civic officials about any unauthorised dumping in their vicinities.

NMMC often received complaints from residents about illegal dumping

The move came after the NMMC started receiving complaints from the residents about illegal dumping taking place across the satellite town. According to civic officials, only those dumping vehicles from Mumbai, that have written permission from the municipality, are allowed to dump debris there. Civic officials also added that the vehicles are allotted a plot to dump the debris.

If they are caught dumping debris without the required permission, then the vehicle is seized and released only after seven days. Jagannath Sinnarkar, deputy municipal commissioner, NMMC, told Sunday mid-day, "Along with the helpline, where residents can call to complain about illegal dumping, we also plan to launch a general helpline on which people can call about issues related to dengue and malaria cases.

The announcement will be made very soon." Residents can also send images of illegal activity on WhatsApp. Last month, mid-day had reported about unauthorised dumping on a plot owned by NMMC in sector 30 (A) in Vashi. Construction debris had been dumped on the plot, which was earlier owned by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

They had handed over the 10,900-sqm land next to the Sion-Panvel highway near Vashi to NMMC. However, as the civic body had not come up with any project on the land, illegal-dumping activities had been reported on the plot.
