Slumdwellers unable to sleep as water from sea sweeps into their homes; forced to take shelter in nearby temple

Residents of a slum close to Banganga Tank had a sleepless night yesterday after their homes were water-logged due to high tide and strong winds billowing from the sea. Most of them have taken shelter inside a temple till the weather conditions improved. Amol More, a resident of Rampur Nagar slum, who lives in a one-storey home, said, "We were sleeping, when we noticed water from the sea sweep inside our house. Without wasting any time, I, with the help of my brother, lifted our mother and grandmother to the first floor."

He also received a mild electric shock, while wading through the water in his home as electricity was still running.

According to More, a few other homes adjacent to the sea also experienced water-logging. Despite living in the slum for nearly 25 years, More claimed that he had never witnessed such a sight before. When mid-day visited the slum last night, people were seen trying to remove water from their homes with the help of buckets and pipes. "Because of the high tide, and warning of the cyclone, we did not want to take any chances. We shifted some of the families to the nearby temple. Most of us have decided to stay here till the weather improves," added More.
