According to a report in the Times of India, police have cited continuous harassment for dowry by the in-laws, as the reason for the woman's drastic action. The joint family was based out of Poisar.

The woman, who was fed up with the way the family treated her, had complained to her father. She had moved to her parents' house during the last week. It was during this time that she hung herself to death using a dupatta. Attempt to provide her medical assistance proved futile as she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The woman, however, did not leave behind a suicide note stating the exact reason for her actions.

The giving and demand for dowry during a marriage is strictly prohibited under Sections 304B and 398A of the IPC. The family, if found guilty, would face a prison sentence of not less than 7 years. The couple were married in February this year.
