Cop slapped the 19-year-old twice on learning that he had told the Anti-Corruption Bureau about his bribe demands
A police sub-inspector from Trombay police station was arrested for bribing, blackmailing and assaulting an accused charged in a kidnapping and rape case. When the officer learnt that the accused approached the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) with complaints against him, he slapped him twice.
Police said the inspector, Ganesh Adsool, had asked accused Amol Avghade (19) for a bribe to grant him leniency in his case. Post-release, he was asked to report to the police station every Friday and Sunday. On Friday, when Avghade arrived at the police station, Adsool allegedly demanded a bribe, after which Avghade reported it to the ACB.
On Saturday, after registering a complaint against the officer, ACB officials laid a trap to catch the cop red-handed. Their plan failed, as Adsool was notified about the setup. Adsool learnt that Avghade had reported him to the ACB, and later slapped him.
Senior Police Inspector Vijay Kadam from Trombay police station said, "PSI Adsool was recently given charge of the detection room, so he was handling Avghade's case. On Sunday, between 9-12 am, Avghade arrived at the police station, after which the officer slapped him twice. He was admitted to Sion Hospital, and we then registered a complaint against him."
ACB officials arrested Adsool on Sunday morning, before the Trombay police could register a case against him. According to the ACB, Adsool has been found guilty of the offence and has been charged for two more offences, as he had earlier blackmailed the accused on two occasions. He first demanded that the accused pay Rs 10,000 to file the chargesheet quickly, and later demanded R15,000 for excluding his uncle's name in the matter.
Director General of ACB, Praveen Dixit, said, "Even though our trap failed, we have arrested Adsool on the basis of his bribe demand." Trombay police has booked the cop under sections 323 and 324 of IPC. He is currently in ACB's custody.
