Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty has filed a police complaint against some taxi drivers who, he claims, double-park outside his offices in Worli, Mumbai, and also harass visitors.
According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, on Friday, the cabbies did not move their taxis to let the actor's car enter the three-storey Anand Niwas's compound. The report claimed that he was instead asked to get down and walk. However, Shetty did not agree, after which he was allegedly threatened. The actor then proceeded to file a complaint as the errant drivers.
Mumbai Mirror reported that the complaint registered with the Worli police states, "The taxi men block the way to entrance of offices. They double-park, making it difficult for any other car to be parked there or exit the building. They also play cards, making it difficult for women to visit and leave safely."
Specifying on Friday's incident, the complaint adds, "There are 40 to 50 taxis parked at a time and when we requested them to give way for our cars and customers, they threatened to bash us." Shetty, speaking to Mumbai Mirror, said the drivers are a nuisance for residents as well, who wait on roadside for school buses to pick up and drop children. "They taxi drivers are a big nuisance, you can ask any shop owner here. Even school buses face problems," he told the paper, adding, "My office is staffed mostly by women and they cannot walk on the footpath at any hour of the day. You will always find the drivers sitting and playing cards there."
Shetty's brother, Sujit, who owns Shri Krishna Hotel in the building, told Mumbai Mirror, "We have always spoken to them in a courteous manner. They just don't listen. Officially, there is parking space for only a few taxis, but you will find 40 to 50 of them along the road. At times, the drivers leave their taxis there for four days. They recently threatened to beat us."
Milind Bharambe, joint police commissioner (traffic), told Mirror: "We are in the process of shifting the taxi stand a little ahead. We hope to get it done in two to three days."
Shetty (55) and his family run a number of businesses, including the furniture store R House and Orca Dive Club, in Anand Niwas on Dr E Moses Road, Worli, Mumbai Mirror reported.
