Mumbai rains: Heavy showers return to city; more expected in next few days

Mumbai witnessed heavy downpour in several areas on Thursday following a prolonged dry spell, which lasted for about 10 days. Colaba, Dadar, Santacruz, Goregoan, Vikrohli and Mulund, received heavy rain showers

Mumbai witnessed heavy downpour in several areas on Thursday following a prolonged dry spell, which lasted for about 10 days. Colaba, Dadar, Santacruz, Goregoan, Vikrohli and Mulund, received heavy rain showers.

According to The Times of India, weather officials have predicted intermittent rain showers for the next 24 hours, with the the India Meteorological Department (IMD) suggesting the current weather conditions will most likely be the same till Sunday.

The IMD Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded 22mm and 14.8mm respectively in the time frame of 9 hours from 8.30 am-5.30 pm, weather officials attribute to be due to an offshore trough in the Arabian sea, which is pushing moisture over the city and coast area.

Sources at IMD further stated that a low-pressure area present over the west of Madhya Pradesh is approaching Gujarat, which will affect parts of North Konkan including Mumbai.

The IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories have recorded 603.5 mm and 717.1 mm respectively since June 1, which is almost 289.5 mm below average in the case of IMD Colaba and 159.1 mm below normal as far as IMD Santacruz is concerned.

93 per cent humidity was recorded by IMD Colaba observatory on Thursday, while the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 92 per cent humidity. Meanwhile, maximum temperature recorded at Colaba was 31.3 degree Celcius, Santacruz recorded 30.8 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures were 28 degree Celcius at Colaba and 27.4 degree Celcius at Santacruz.
