Similar to a scene right out of a Bollywood flick, an RPF constable on Friday chased a mobile thief for about a kilometre before he managed to catch hold of him. Even after falling down twice, climbing four-foot-high grilled walls and sustaining injuries on his left leg, he recovered the cellphone that the thief had stolen from a passenger at Kurla station.

RPF constable Vikas Gujar sustained injuries on his left leg

According to the police, RPF constable Vikas Gujar was patrolling at the Kurla station in plain clothes when the incident took place. Around 6.45 pm, a passenger, who was waiting on platform 7 to board a Vashi-bound train, suddenly started shouting when a thief snatched his mobile phone and escaped. The accused jumped onto the tracks and ran towards Kurla East.

On spotting the thief, Gujar started chasing him. After about a kilometre, he caught hold of the accused and recovered the cellphone. In the meantime, Gujar also alerted head constables Vikas Patil and Dinesh Patil and constable D B Shinde.

Speaking to mid-day, Suresh Atri, senior inspector, Kurla RPF, said, "Gujar sustained injuries on his left leg during the chase. The accused, identified as Vasim Yusuf Sheikh, 23, was taken to the RPF office in Kurla for preliminary inquiry.
