Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh, a 1980 batch IPS officer, has resigned as police chief, to join politics

Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh, a 1980 batch IPS officer, has resigned. The top cop met Home Minister R R Patil to submit his papers around noon yesterday. He is likely to contest the next Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket, say political observers.

When asked whether Singh has resigned, Patil confirmed and said, "Yes, he met me and expressed his desire to quit." Sources claim that BJP leaders, including Rajnath Singh, have approached the top cop to contest the forthcoming elections from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

Those in the race to fill the post include Additional DGP (law and order) Javed Ahmed, Additional DGP (traffic) Vijay Kamble and Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Rakesh Maria.
