The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be granting special online permissions for those who want to sacrifice a goat on the occasion of Eid al-Adha also known as Bakrid. The process will be available for a limited period between August 21 and September 4. A mobile app will also be launched by the BMC for this purpose.
According to The Indian Express, under this new arrangement, anybody with a valid gate pass can log on to the official website of the BMC and upload his/her identification proof and gate pass number and obtain a customised licence to sacrifice an animal.
Sources at the Deonar abattoir where the gate pass is generally issued say, those interested in obtaining an online permission will be required to enter their name, address and upload five identification documents accepted by the government. The applicants are also needed to provide the date on which they plan to perform the ritual.
BMC has decided to undertake this initiative since there are about 2.5 lakh goats sold at the Deonar abattoir for slaughter, the creation of an online permission would ease operations. Previously, using the gate pass as the sole means to track people purchasing animals was a difficult task.
As per the present system, the gate pass, which was issued at Deonar abattoir was the only document, which was treated as a permission to slaughter goats. Most of the times these gate passes won't carry the name of the buyer and would lead to problems during the ritual.
Also, under Section 403 E of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act (MMCA), the municipal commissioner will grant permission to slaughter animals outside the Deonar abattoir in other places.
