At least nine pedestrians, including an infant, were injured after a 19-year-old woman, a law student, rammed her car into them at Dharavi in Central Mumbai, police said on Friday. The incident occurred on June 19 evening around 5.30 pm when the woman, a resident of Kalbadevi in South Mumbai, lost control over the vehicle at T-Junction on 90 feet road in Dharavi, an official said.
The accused identified as Dhruva Rajpal Jain, is a resident of Kalbadevi in Mumbai and is a First year Law student. Sources revealed that her father was not giving her car to drive which is why she hired a car through online cab services and was going to Bandra with her two friends when the incident occurred. When her car reached crowded Dharavi road, the woman panicked and pressed the accelerator instead of brakes, the official said, adding that the car hit several pedestrians and vehicles.
Two of the injured persons were admitted in Sion hospital for treatment, he said. According to police, the victim Sajida Sameer Khan 26, a resident of Kherwadi was going Dharavi to meet her relatives. She was accompanied by her husband and their 3-month-old son. The accident happened as soon as they got down from an auto to cross the road, injuring all three. Two more pedestrians Bibi Fatima 27 and Arshad Sayed 38, too were injured. While Sameer Khan got injury near eye, Bibi Fatima lost a few teeth due to impact on her jaw. Both were admitted to the hospital and are under treatment.
The woman was arrested next day of the incident and was released on bail with Rs 5 thousand surety bond. The accused has been booked under sections 279 (Rash Driving or riding on a public way), 337(Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code.
