The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce
Rocking Rollback
Some time ago, this paper had carried a piece about simmering discontent within the swish Bombay Gymkhana Club in Fort over the decision to raise membership for members' children to Rs 5 lakh each.

Now, the Managing Committee at its meeting reconsidered its earlier decision taken in the matter of increase in the entrance fees of Permanent Members children seeking Permanent Membership.
The Managing Committee, after deliberations and discussions, has unanimously decided that this is rolled back to be Rs 3,00,000 plus service tax instead of Rs 5,00,000 below the age of 26 years instead of 24 years.
Even members' children above 26 but below 30 will have to pay Rs 5,00,000 instead of R 7,50,000. There are also some options given about paying in instalments. This rollback may have some parents rocking.
What a welcome
Around 100 fans from the city of Indian Super League (ISL) team North East United Football Club gathered at 8.30 pm yesterday at Mumbai domestic airport to welcome the team. The club arrived ahead of their October 24 clash with Mumbai FC which will take place at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium.

On Sunday, the team managed a draw with Goa FC in a close match. The North East community in Mumbai has been working together closely after they set up a helpline in April this year to reduce attacks on them.
The North East FC is co-owned by Bollywood actor John Abraham and I-League Club - Shillong Lajong. The eight states that form this club are Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram.
This welcome was planned and coordinated by So So KJP who said, "We are supporting and rooting for our team. Though we are eight states, we all have one team - North East United FC which in a way stands for our spirit. Though we are divided, we are still united as one team, as lovers of one game - football."
Something to chew on
The Bombay Natural History Society often sends us news about events and publications by email, and we quite like their signature: "If you grow four grains of corn; consume one, donate the second, allow other creatures to feed on the third and store the fourth. Mayan proverb." A principle which could truly change the world if followed!
The cost of benefit
Tired of repeated Facebook exhortations to repost messages in support of cancer patients, reader Anil Shibad, a Mumbaikar now living in the US, decided to weigh the pros and cons of this:
1. Average work hours pa = 1,960
2. Average US salary pa = $70,000
3. Average hourly rate = $35.71
4. Average rate per minute = $0.60
5. Average rate per second = $0.01
6. Average time to read/post sappy messages on Facebook = 15 secs
7. Average number of friends on Facebook = 300
8. If each friend does as you ask, time spent/cost = 4,500 secs /$45
9. Instead of posting warm-n-fuzzy messages that go nowhere, donate and inspire each friend to contribute 1 sec of their earning towards cancer research and ask them to carry on the chain in their friend circle
10. $45 per friend circle will increase exponentially and you would have helped gain ground in the war against cancer
11. Go ahead my brave brethren, enlist at https://donate.cancer.org/index.
Time is precious... spend it wisely... all it takes is just 1 second.
This is in US dollars but it makes sense in any currency. We like the idea stop wasting time and put it to good use instead!
