The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

An ode to the stars
Many trophies may adorn their shelves, but this one is special. This evening, Dharmendra, Ameen Sayani and Helen will be presented with Lifetime Achievement awards by the Bimal Roy Memorial Committee at Chowpatty's Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Set up in 1997, the committee has been honouring veterans, contemporary filmmakers and technicians.

Some of the past recipients include 82-year-old Dilip Gupta, DOP of Madhumati (honoured at the first Smriti Sandhya programme conceived as the filmmaker's musical bio), filmmaker Kidar Sharma, make-up artiste Pandhari Dada and Ram Gopal Varma (for Satya).

This year, debut director Neeraj Ghaywan (Masaan) and screenwriter Juhi Chaturvedi (Vicky Donor, Piku) are on the honour roll. And with Roy's assistant, the 91-year-old Debu Sen gracing the event, the evening promises to be a beautiful walk down the memory lane.

Peace together

Waiter, there's a VIP in my soup!
Congress VP Rahul Gandhi is known to make impromptu meal plans. He surprised everyone in 2011 when on a tour of Mendhki village in Jhansi district of UP, when he dropped into the home of a Dalit family and shared a meal.

On his Mumbai visit yesterday, he decided to go a bit more mainstream. On his agenda was a meeting with party workers in Malad, and a detour in itinerary saw him land up with Sanjay Nirupam at Orlem's popular Chinese joint, Uncle's Kitchen.

The kitchen, says nervous-with-excitement owner Ronnie D'souza, had shut for the day, but something tasty was rustled up for "the gentleman with no starry airs".

CR special for marathon
You know it's marathon time when even government agencies feel the excitement and get caught in the running fever. The Central Railway will be running two Marathon Specials to bring 42-km runners and enthusiasts to the start line at CST, long before the 5.40 am start. The two trains begin at 3 am from Kalyan and will reach CST at 4.30 am.

Another train will start at 3.10 am from Panvel and reach CST at 4.30 am. This is at least half an hour before regular station timings. Just like Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express which starts from Kings Cross Platform 9 ¾, the Marathon Specials or Marathon Express, dub what you will, will take off from Kalyan and Panvel. Mumbai, ride the train to watch marathon history.

Bonding over film and food, Jewish style
The screening of a documentary on the Jewish community at The Hive on Thursday saw an overwhelming response with over 70 guests.

An added incentive was a Kerala Jewish spread that featured Cochin Jewish Chicken Roast and Kadathala Pastel (half circle pies with filling), inspired from the book Spice and Kosher by Dr Essie Sassoon, a Cochin Jew. We wish we were there.

In the driver's seat
A member of Orion Racing India (ORI), the student Formula racing team at KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, takes their latest model, Rigel, for a spin.

The car features a 390cc KTM Duke 390 engine and can go from zero to 100 kmph in 4.5 seconds. It will represent ORI at the upcoming Formula Student India 2016 competition.

Cheers to theatre
You head to a pub for a tipple and tapping of your feet or may be a gig to make things better. But it's rare to find a play going on there. Brewbot Eatery and Pub Brewery offers us a pleasant surprise with The Fringe Theatre Festival featuring three plays.

In case you missed day one of the theatrics on Friday, drop by over the weekend to catch Love, Bombs & Apples (today) and Colaba Casanova. Additionally, those with tickets for the play can enjoy drinks at happy hour prices all through the night.
