The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Pressure, say what's that?
Girl Power is all set to hold centrestage at Jio MAMI's 18th Film Festival that kicks off on October 18. This year's theme is centred on equality, where masterpieces by women directors from across the world will be screened. Expectedly, the interaction veered towards questions related to Pakistan and India's strained relations.
When Karan Johar was asked whether he is under "pressure" regarding his latest film, which stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, he at his cheeky best, replied, "Pressure? I thought you were asking about my morning business!"Kangana Ranaut who unveiled the logo of the festival, also chipped in with, "The country is already mourning the loss of its soldiers; it wouldn't be right to objectify anything."
Interestingly, of the 175 films from nearly 45 countries, Iram Parveen Bilal's Josh from Pakistan debuts at the fest. The power of film, indeed.
The politics of diet restrictions
Earlier this week, a senior Union Minister known for his love for food was in town. He dropped in at a dinner hosted by a state minister from Vidarbha at a fine dine restaurant in SoBo. The Union Minister seemed to take his doctor's advice too seriously as far as his diet plan went. While there were several delicacies laid out at the table, he refrained from tucking into any of it.
He asked if he could be served juice instead, but the restaurant had no fresh juice available, and so he sat hungry for nearly 30 minutes and hobnobbed with the crowd. Eventually, unable to bear the sight, his friend, the host, abandoned his food and the two left together. Committed friends!
How about an airport food hop?
When it comes to swank airports in the country, we must admit (grudgingly, too) that Bengaluru's Kempegowda airport, makes the cut for a host of reasons, including a diverse, well-curated food court.
Now, we hear that a few folks in that city have actually gone ahead and organised a food trail to cover the lipsmacking options inside the terminal. We're wondering when such an idea will be executed in our very own five-star-tagged T2. We'd love to see how that one turns out. Over to you, Mumbai.
The bros who went to Lanka
A new take on the Ramayana is bound to relook at our epics. And let me tell you bro, that it is not a very bad idea to reach out to a yuppie reader by speaking their language.
An illustration from the book
Confused? Well, the entire story, though in abridged form, has been retold in rhyme using YA-friendly vocabulary, by Kairavi Bharat Ram and Ananya Mittal; quite a feat, we must add. Quirky art by Vandana Bist and Suvidha Mistry also grabs the eye. You laud their feat some more when you find out that the authors were in school when they wrote it. Way to go.
Vote's happening at the Gym?
After the contentious Cricket Club of India (CCI) election, the Bombay Gymkhana will hold elections this evening, 5.45 pm onwards. The SoBo club, which has been hitting the headlines because of its tussle with the BMC over land and parking matters, will hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) after which, the members will be given an opportunity to vote.
Bombay Gymkhana
This practice, is similar to companies, since the club too comes under the Company Act, 1/3rd of the Bombay Gymkhana 18-man committee will retire. So there will be candidates standing for six posts. The president though remains unchanged. There will be different posts; a member quipped, "It will be low-key; nothing heavy duty," while another chuckled, "no masala for you press people." Ah, we fall upon the thorns of life. We bleed.
