Mumbai Crime: Thieves rob Lalbaug flat, then set fire to the place

Was this their way of covering their tracks? Perhaps. In an incident that came to light in the wee hours of Monday, the police were informed that a flat on Dr BA Road in Lalbaug was robbed of Rs 90,000, some gold ornaments and gadgets by unidentified thieves who, after committing the crime, set the place on fire.

Under cover of dark
The flat in Sadanand Narvekar Niwas was owned by one Pravin Pednekar, who had rented it out Prakash Daundkar and his family. Prakash, his wife and two sons, were returning to their native place and had been in the process of shifting when the incident happened.

The entire family had left, only Prakash's son Raja was in the flat and was to move all their remaining belongings.However, at 3.30 am on Monday, neighbours saw smoke coming out of the house and they informed the fire brigade, which reached the spot and doused the blaze within minutes. The neighbours also called up Pednekar, who informed Raja.

"We were to shift back to our native place this week. That's why we had packed everything up. Our tally shows that Rs 90,000 cash and 20 gram gold, five-six mobile phones and two laptops have been stolen," Raja told mid-day, adding, "Thieves must have set the house on fire after robbing us of all our valuables."

Case registered
The Kalachowkie police has registered a case against unknown person/s under sections 380 (theft) and 457 (house breaking) of the IPC. "It is still unclear whether the fire occurred due to a short circuit or someone started it. We are checking footage from the CCTVs in the vicinity," said senior inspector Dilip Ugle.
