Cops from Wadala Truck Terminal police station have arrested a postmaster for stealing Rs 15 lakh from the safe of the Wadala post office.
Harish Gawli (46) stole from the money deposited by people at the post office after the note ban, police sources said.
The theft came to light when bank authorities were taking the safe to the Reserve Bank of India. According to police sources, cops had received a complaint about the theft.
When the police detained the postmaster for questioning, he revealed that he knew where keys to the safe were kept. "But, when we confronted him about recent deposits to his account - his bank statements showed deposits of over Rs 4 lakh - he confessed to having stolen R10 lakh. He also revealed that he had distributed a portion of that money among friends and family and spent a considerable part of his loot," said an officer from the Wadala TT police station.
He added, "Now, we are in the process of recovering the stolen money. He has been arrested for theft and cheating, and remanded in police custody."
