Mumbai Crime: Wife kills sleeping husband with a stone

The 49-year-old suffers from schizophrenia, according to her daughter, and may have killed her husband during an attack; police arrested her after the daughter informed them of the incident


A housewife murdered her husband in his sleep on Monday, and then told her daughter he had fallen in the bathroom and died. The Shivaji Nagar police arrested the woman on Monday after the daughter informed them of the incident The deceased was identified as Debashish Gokul Sen (56), who worked as a manager in Indian Oil Corporation. The couple lived in Indian Oil Nagar in Govandi and their daughter stays separately.

According to the police, the incident took place at 7.30 am on Monday, when Debashish was asleep. His 49-year-old wife Sumitra allegedly killed him with a sharp stone, and later told her daughter and other relatives that her husband had died after falling in the bathroom. The daughter then informed the Shivaji Nagar police.

An officer from Shivaji Nagar police station said, "Their daughter is a complainant in the case, as she was the first one to be informed by the accused. The daughter has said that her mother suffers from schizophrenia and that she may have killed her husband while suffering an attack."

Police have also recovered the sharp stone. Sumitra has been booked under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code. She was arrested immediately after the complaint was registered on Monday. "We have arrested Sumitra on the basis of her daughter's statement.

The accused has not revealed any facts since then. In order to verify whether she actually has schizophrenia, we will take her to J J Hospital for a medical examination," added the officer.
