Jaggan Upale laced his mother Kalpana’s beverages with sedatives; fled her residence with gold ornaments worth Rs 31,500 after she fell unconscious
Fact is stranger than fiction. A 33-year-old man has been arrested for robbing his 54-year-old mother of gold ornaments worth Rs 31,500.
Jaggan Upale
The accused claimed he was unemployed and committed the crime to feed his daughter and wife. While Jaggan Upale robbed his mother Kalpana on August 22, he was arrested on Monday.
Assistant Police Inspector Kishor Pawar from Kurla police station said, "While the victim lived alone at Kurla, the accused resides in a rented apartment at Mankhurd with his wife and daughter.
Jaggan came to visit his mother on the day of the crime and offered her beverages that were laced with sedatives. Once Kalpana lost consciousness after consuming the spiked drinks, the accused fled her residence with her gold chain, four earrings and the rings she was wearing."
The next day when Kalpana regained consciousness, she discovered the theft. She immediately suspected Jaggan of foul play, as he was the only person who had visited her the previous night and lodged a complaint.
Pawar said, "Based on the complaint filed by his mother, we picked up the accused from his Mankhurd residence. Initially he refuted the charges, but later confessed to the crime.
During interrogation we learnt that there was an ongoing property dispute between the two. Soon after his father's death last year, Jaggan started nagging Kalpana to transfer the entire property in his name."
Jaggan was booked under section 380 (theft in a dwelling house, etc) of the IPC and has been remanded in police custody till Saturday. In addition, the police recovered all the ornaments that were robbed from Kalpana.
