The woman was caught in the act on the surveillance cameras installed in the store, and the case has been registered with the Shivaji Park police.
The woman, well-versed in types of jewellery, asks the salesman to show her gold rings, bangles and chains. She then asked him to show her more varieties in design
According to the police, the crime occurred on Christmas day at Waman Hari Pethe's jewellery store in Dadar (West). The woman, who is in her fifties, entered the store in the afternoon dressed in a sari. Speaking fluent Marathi, she asked the sales staff to show her different types of gold rings. She later also asked for gold chains and bangles.
As the salesman goes inside, the woman slides a gold chain and a bangle inside her purse
The woman is well-versed in gold ornaments and requested the salesman to show her more variety. No sooner had the staff member gone in, than she slid the ornaments on the display table inside her purse, and fled the scene. She escaped so swiftly that the other employees didn't even notice her departure.
The case was registered the same day with the police, and the loss reported was of one gold chain and one bangle, worth Rs 1.5 lakh. Parshuram Kakad, senior inspector of Shivaji Park police station, said, "The hunt is on for this woman who dresses like a housewife. We have made photocopies (of the grabs) and sent it to all police stations.
So swift and smooth is her escape that employees don't realise the store has been robbed of Rs 1.5 lakh worth of gold ornaments
Looking at the way she committed the crime, she looks like a habitual offender with a past criminal record." Police suspect she may have committed such thefts in jewellery stores in Kalyan and Thane as well. Kakad implored jewellery shop owners and employees to stay alert from such women who come on pretext of buying jewellery and steal ornaments.
