Mangala Borse (55) was arrested by the Badlapur (East) police after she admitted to having dumped her granddaughter Ketki Hire in a nullah in the Ganesh Ghat area of Badlapur, and later cooking up a story that a woman passing by in an auto had abducted the child.
The police started suspecting the woman after an autopsy showed that the child had drowned around 6 am. Her grandmother, however, had told them that Ketki was kidnapped around 9 am, while the two of them were on their way back to her daughter Mayuri's home.
"Upon being questioned, she confessed that she had killed Ketki, who had cerebral palsy. She said she was worried about how her daughter Mayuri and son-in-law Kapil would care for the child, as both were working. The child used to spend most of the day with the woman, who said she was taunted by neighbours," said Ishwar Andhalkar, senior police inspector of Badlapur police station.
"We have learnt that she attempted suicide in the Ambernath lock-up, by stuffing her saree into her mouth, and was found unconscious by a constable, who rushed her to the nearby Central Hospital," said Andhalkar.
