Meeting a man she had only known through a social networking website cost a Pune woman dear, after he allegedly raped her, got her pregnant, took away her gold ring and ended their relationship.

When the man refused to meet her later and allegedly assaulted her for trying to do so, the woman lodged a case with the Sanghvi police in Pune, who transferred the case to the Nirmal Nagar police station in Bandra, since the alleged rape occurred in their jurisdiction. The accused was identified as Satyajit alias Vicky Kharat (25), a resident of Bandra.

The survivor, Pallavi Kadam (name changed) works for a private firm in Pune, where she stays with her mother and sister. Around April this year, Kadam and Kharat became friends on social networking website Facebook.

They would chat for long hours in the night and, then, decided to exchange phone numbers. The duo then spoke on the phone regularly, fell in love with each other and decided to meet.

The 26-year-old survivor came to Mumbai in July to meet Kharat, who took her to a place in Bandra and allegedly raped her. After a few days, when Kadam was going home he took away her gold ring as well.

When the woman told Kharat she was pregnant, he started to distance himself from her and told her he was not prepared for marriage. He took her to Pimple Gurav in Pune, and got an abortion done at a hospital.

Once the operation was over, Kharat stonewalled the survivor. He would refuse to take her phone calls or reply to her messages, and also deleted her from his Facebook friend list. When Kadam went to Pune again to meet him, he allegedly abused and assaulted her and told her not to attempt to meet him again.

The woman then went to the Sanghvi police station in Pune and filed a case against Kharat. The Pune police transferred the case to Nirmal Nagar police station in Bandra.

A police officer from the police station said, "The accused was arrested from his home last week and remanded in police custody by the court. The woman will be called for further investigations."
