Mumbai Crime: 47-yr-old housewife robbed, murdered in Vile Parle home

Police suspect the hand of someone known to the family in the murder of Vimala Naagji Kariya, who was alone at home at the time of the incident; accused stole nearly Rs 30,000 in cash


A 47-year-old homemaker was found with her throat slit in her flat in Swapna Apartment in Vile Parle (E) around noon yesterday. The accused decamped with nearly Rs 30,000 in cash after killing the woman, and locked the door before leaving. Police said preliminary investigation has not revealed any signs of a forced entry.

According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as Vimala Naagji Kariya (in pic), who lived in a house on the third floor of the four-storey building with her husband and two sons. She was, however, alone at the time of the incident, which is believed to have taken place between 11 am and noon.

The murder came to light around noon, when the domestic help employed by the family went to the house for work. She kept ringing the bell and, when no one answered, she called up the elder son of the deceased to tell him that Vimala was not opening the door.

He asked her to go to their relative's house on the second floor of the same building to collect a key and use that to open the door. When the maid finally managed to open the door, she was shocked to see Vimala's body lying in a pool of blood, with the throat slit. She immediately informed Vimala's relatives, who called the police, her husband and her sons.

According to Vimala's younger son, Latesh Kariya, his elder brother and he used to leave the house around 10 am every day, while their father, who runs a stationery shop in Borivli, left a little later. He said they received the news of the murder yesterday aftenoon and found R25,000-R30,000 in cash was missing.

‘No CCTV cameras'
Vile Parle police officials said no CCTV cameras are installed in the building. An officer said they suspect someone known to the family has committed the crime because there are no signs of forced entry. "We have registered the case under various Sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder). Further investigation is on," he said.
