The youth who hails from Rajasthan, had brought a revolver with him, and planned to teach her a lesson; he fired at her around 8 am and had a ticket to flee on a 10 am train
A 19-year-old boy was arrested by the Kalwa police for firing at a 15-year-old girl on Friday morning. The police have seized a country-made revolver from the accused, who was produced in the Thane sessions court and remanded in police custody.
The accused, identified as Kamalkant Saini, is from Rajasthan, and a distant relative of the girl. The girl resides in Mahatma Phule chawl, at Kalwa, along with her elder sister and parents. Her father works as a labourer at a construction site. They hail from Uttar Pradesh.
A month ago, the girl along with her parents, visited Uttar Pradesh to attend a wedding. "The accused and the girl were introduced to each other at the wedding. The accused liked her and proposed to her. But she refused," said J Babar, senior police inspector, Kalwa police station.
Later Saini started approaching her, asking her to marry him, but she turned him down each time. Police said he also came to Mumbai to meet her. They said she told him she was in love with a boy named Kamlesh.
"Some eight days ago, he had come to Mumbai again and was staying at Kalwa at the girl's place. The accused decided to return to Rajasthan. But he wanted to teach her a lesson and had brought a country-made revolver with him," said a police officer from Kalwa police station.
'Planned to kill her'
On Friday morning the girl's parents left for work. "The girl and her sister were watching a movie at their residence. The accused had a ticket for a 10 am train. He had decided to approach her a final time, to ask her to join him and go to Rajasthan, where they could get married. The girl refused and cleared that she was in a relationship with Kamlesh. The accused got angry and fired a round that hit her on her neck, injuring her," added Babar.
The girl's sister started screaming and neighbours caught hold of the boy and locked him in a room. "We received a call from the locals, after which we reached the spot. During a search, we found the country made revolver that had four bullets in it, out of which one he had fired. He was about to fire a second, but it got stuck. His plan was to kill her and run away by the 10 am train. The incident took place around 8 am and he was arrested before 9 am," said Sandeep Bagul, assistant police inspector, Kalwa police station.
A case has been registered at Kalwa police station under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and different sections of the Arms Act.
"The girl was earlier taken to Kalwa civic hospital for treatment. But as she was bleeding severely, it was suggested by the doctors that she be shifted to KEM hospital, where she is undergoing treatment," added Babar.
